Adele

Like Paish, I'm drawn to artists from overseas. Robyn, Florence & the Machine, Temper Trap, Mumford & Sons, Sol Seppy... to name a few!

Silly me, I didn't check out the artists I hadn't heard of that Paish wrote about, but after reading an article about Adele and then having some Scottish friends tell me i HAD to hear her new single (below) I decided it was time to check it out. I always find that the name of a musician will come up over and over, and when I finally check them out, it's instant love. So it was with Adele. (And reading the post again now, I'm off to check out Kate Nash next since she's been suggested to me a few times!)

The best part? Adele's Toronto show has just been moved to the ACC due to demand- I'm SO stalking ticketmaster Saturday afternoon! (Too bad it won't be as intimate, but I feel like I won't be disappointed like I was with Florence!)

florence and the disappointment

After months of anticipation, went to see Florence and the Machine tonight.
We started here...

But thanks to some girls with huge mops of hair created a wall of hair obscuring our vision, and also two opening acts (one semi decent, other crap.. the ones pictured) and her not coming on stage til 11 (doors @8), we took advantage of the VIP upgrade to the balcony thanks to Rogers urmusic. We got a seat here...

But still drama galore upstairs. Two girls got kicked out for stealing some girls seats (we wondered why they threw the jacket on the floor). Anyways, Florence finally came on...

And the acoustics in the Sound Academy were terrible, the beautiful harp sounded like crap, and Florence didn't sound like she was trying in about 80% of the songs they played. A few good ones, but definitely would not see again and don't recommend you waste your money either. Blah.

a musical month

Actually, it was a fairly NON-musical month since I only drove a handful of times. Driving is my prime music-listening time. I really need speakers for my iPod! When the paycheques start rolling in, for sure.

Anyways, what was musical? CONCERTS GALORE! By galore, I mean two. I'd say that's a lot in one month haha!

First up, Lilith Fair.
Tara Maclean is married to one of the co-founders. The other co-founder and her sister were back-up vocals. Amazing!

We also saw Chantal Kreviazuk, Lights, Mary J Blidge and Sarah Maclachlan. Talk about incredible. It was a great night, despite beoing poured on half the day and staying up way past our bedtimes (i.e. midnight sleepytime and 5:30 wake-up for a 14 hour day!)

This past Friday, back to Molson Amphitheatre (this time in SEATS!) to see Robyn & Keane at the Disco Lemonade festival. We started here:

Brilliant! Yes, no zoom, we were pretty well front row on the floor. I've loved Robyn since her first disc in 1990, and discovered Keane on my travels. I listened to both these artists a lot while backpacking so it was a nostalgic, amazing concert.  (my fave Keane song - the video's a bit odd though!)

Next up? Florence & the Machine, November 3rd! Just got the disc on iTunes and it's amazing.

So, last night was the night!
Zooey Deschanel, in the flesh.

Cameras are NOT ALLOWED in the Sound Academy, so this was blurrily snapped via iPhone. Just a clue of how close we were to the stage (no zoom). We didn't even realize until we left and had to wade our way to the back of a looong room full of people!

Anyways, going in, I didn't know how much I would actually like the music. I honestly bought the ticket just to see Zooey. It was actually really good! Not my usual kind of music and I won't be able to listen to it all the time, but a nice quirky change! The openers, The Chapin sisters, had the same kind of sound and awesome voices. So all in all, a nice surprise!!

Does anyone still watch Gossip Girl? (I just love watching to see Serena's outfits -> dream world!)
Anyways, I was able to "soundhound" the song at the end of the episode(my new alternative to Shazam- i got it when I first got my phone last year, and it was progressively upgraded to be way better and also expensive- but it's pretty awesome, does lyrics and sometimes only takes a few seconds, rather than waiting to capture the full clip!) Ok, sidetracking done. Love this remix. Not my usual genre but I am feeling it. Perhaps in preparation for actually going out in Toronto this weekend, weird. It's been awhile since I've done that!



Also hitting up Toronto next week to watch the City Aftershow taping haha, They have giveaways, maybe I'll get something sweet.

Ok Go!

After watching the new OK Go (RGM version) vid, I had to do some research.

The video is one continuous nearly 4 minute clip, which took engineers about a month and a half to build and test a Rube Goldberg machine to match the audio timing with perfection. Each reset of the machine took about an hour to reset, even with hiring an extra 30 people specifically for that job. It reminds me of a ginormous MouseTrap game board.

I love Robyn. Ever since her first album, just before I moved to Milton, I've been a fan. There are a few albums that totally transport me to certain points of my backpacking trip, and her self-titled album fits the bill.

Whatcha Say

I love the song "Whatcha Say" by "Jason Derulo" (in quotes for a reason). Similar to the Eminem-Dido song, it's really the OTHER song that totally makes it.

I fell in love with the song Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap after watching the movie The Last Kiss a few years back. I've never seen the video until now, I did not picture her looking like that for some reason! Watch it here, embedding is disabled.

Kings of Leon

Alrighty! So it's been over a week since the KOL show and I love them more than ever! The concert (in Hamilton, at Copps Coliseum), was absolutely BRILLIANT. They opened with the first track on their newest album (Only by the Night), "Closer". I LOVE the riff of this song and was so glad they opened with it... definitely a good way to generate a screaming crowd!

They didn't play much old stuff, which was ok because I'm only familiar with the two most recent CDs (for now!). Their last CD, Because of the Times, reminds me of chilling out in my dorm in Wellington, New Zealand when I lived/worked there. Good times.

I can't remember being in a crowd going so crazy screaming their heads off before. It was incredible. I love the energy you get from that! They performed amazingly, and sound very true to what their albums sound like- all in all it was incredible (aside from the girl 2 seats down tossing her cookies ALL over the floor and getting dangerously close to my shoes. Oh well, at least I was not the unfortunate people in front whose jackets got splashed. Big coincidence, that was actually one of my college classmates sisters boyfriends who got the short end of the stick on that one!)
